FedEx opens new Manchester facility to support UK air trade

FedEx has opened a new 38,000 sqft logistics facility near Manchester Airport, bolstering its air cargo operations in the UK’s Northwest region.

FedEx has opened a new 38,000 sqft logistics facility near Manchester Airport, bolstering its air cargo operations in the UK’s Northwest region.

The move is part of a strategic relocation designed to enhance freight capabilities and support growing customer demand driven by e-commerce and cross-border trade.

The new site, located just half a mile from Manchester Airport, is positioned within a region that contributes 22.5% of the UK’s total freight GDP.

The investment underlines FedEx’s commitment to strengthening national air cargo infrastructure while supporting British businesses with faster, more efficient shipping services.

Equipped with an advanced automated sorting system and x-ray screening technologies, the facility is set to boost parcel throughput and streamline freight processing. It mirrors the technology deployed at FedEx’s major site at Stansted Airport, which the company says has already delivered tangible benefits to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

“The opening of our enhanced facility in Manchester is a significant milestone for FedEx and our valued customers as we continue to advance our freight capabilities in the UK,” said Steve Johnson, managing director, UK air operations at FedEx. “With the rising demand for cargo aviation and the rapid growth of e-commerce, we recognise the need to reconfigure our network to prioritise both speed and efficiency.’’

He added: “We are committed to setting our customers up for success in what continues to be a dynamic period for trade and logistics. Our goal is to ensure businesses in the Northwest experience the same benefits we’ve already delivered at Stansted.”
